SDSU Aztecs Left Out of NCAA Tournament — Named Among Last Four Out

By Santee Pulse Staff · Published March 16, 2026 · 3 min read

San Diego State University's men's basketball program was shut out of the 2026 NCAA Tournament following Selection Sunday on March 15, snapping a five-consecutive-year run of March Madness appearances for the Aztecs.

The NCAA selection committee named SDSU among its last four out — a distinction that acknowledges the Aztecs were on the bubble but ultimately did not receive one of the 68 at-large or automatic bids. The other teams identified as the last four out were Oklahoma, Auburn, and Indiana.

The Aztecs' season unraveled late, losing four of their last five games heading into the Mountain West Tournament. They needed a conference tournament title to secure an automatic bid, but lost the Mountain West Tournament championship game to Utah State, 73-62, missing the automatic bid that would have secured their spot in the field.

The disappointment ends what had been a remarkable run under head coach Brian Dutcher. SDSU had reached the national championship game in 2023 and had been a consistent postseason presence at Viejas Arena on the SDSU campus, drawing passionate Aztec fans each March.

The Aztecs are not expected to accept a bid to the National Invitation Tournament, according to multiple reports. Fans and alumni looking to follow March Madness can still watch the full 68-team bracket, which tips off with the First Four games this week.
