Lantern Crest Senior Living in Santee will unveil a newly completed mural celebrating San Diego history during a free public ceremony Aug. 5, according to Patch.

The event is scheduled for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. outside The Plaza at Lantern Crest and will include a ribbon cutting, remarks from muralist David Ybarra and Lantern Crest leadership, light refreshments, additional artwork by Ybarra and live music.

Patch reported that Ybarra spent several months creating the large-scale mural, which features regional landmarks and community touchstones including the Hotel del Coronado, Coronado Bridge, Pacific Beach Pier, Belmont Park, the USS Midway, the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, the Padres, the Chargers, the Gaslamp Quarter, the Lakeside Rodeo, local missions and scenes from the civil rights movement.

The mural also honors Harold K. Brown, a civil rights leader and former Lantern Crest resident who became the first African American to hold an administrative position at San Diego State University and helped establish local chapters of the Congress of Racial Equality.

For Santee residents, the unveiling adds a local arts event to the late-summer calendar while highlighting a piece of regional history now rooted at a Santee senior living community.
