Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office is offering $50,000 rewards for information that helps solve more than two dozen cold cases statewide, including five in San Diego County, according to NBC 7 San Diego.
The San Diego County cases listed by NBC 7 include the 1999 killing of Teresa Madrigal, whose body was found near Lake Poway; the 2018 killing of Arthur Jordan in Logan Heights; the 2019 killing of Gregory Ruffin in San Diego; the 2019 killing of Navy sailor LeMontee Stevenson in Logan Heights; and the 2021 killing of Navy sailor Corneilius Brown in La Mesa.
Brown, 22, was shot in the doorway of his apartment in the 4300 block of Echo Court in La Mesa on April 24, 2021, according to NBC 7. Authorities said two suspects knocked on his door and shot him when he answered.
Newsom said in a statement quoted by NBC 7 that every family deserves answers and justice, and that the rewards are meant to encourage people with information to come forward.
For East County readers, the La Mesa case is the closest of the five listed, but several of the rewards involve San Diego County families still waiting for answers years later. Anyone with information in Brown’s case was asked to call La Mesa Police Department Detective Mike Butcher at (619) 667-7538 or submit an anonymous tip to San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
