Storm Runoff Closes SD Beaches This Weekend — What Santee Residents Should Know

By Santee Pulse Staff · Published February 22, 2026 · 3 min read

Several San Diego County beaches are closed this weekend due to elevated bacteria levels in the water following the recent series of storms that drenched the region.

County health officials posted closure notices along beaches spanning from Imperial Beach through the Silver Strand and into Coronado on Saturday, citing water conditions that exceed safe swimming thresholds. Officials advised the public not to enter the water in affected areas, and yellow beach hazard signs have been posted at closures warning visitors to stay out.

The closures come as a General Rain Advisory remains in effect for San Diego County through Monday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. Heavy runoff from storms typically carries bacteria and other contaminants into coastal waters. According to NBC 7, the yellow signs are typically posted roughly 72 hours after heavy rain — though the warnings did not stop some surfers from paddling out on Saturday.

For Santee and East County residents planning a day trip to the coast on what turned out to be a sunny, warm Sunday after weeks of storms, the advisories cover some of the most popular beach stretches in San Diego's south county. County health officials said there are elevated levels of bacteria in the water and are advising people not to go in.
