A company with deep roots in East County is the latest California corporation to pack up for the Lone Star State. Public Storage, which traces its origins to a single location in El Cajon opened in 1972, has announced it is relocating its corporate headquarters from Glendale to Frisco, Texas, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

According to the company's own history, when that first El Cajon location opened, the two founders celebrated with a fiesta — mariachis, bright orange doors, and a location designed to catch the eye of drivers on the nearby highway. The company has since grown into one of the largest self-storage operators in the country, with thousands of locations nationwide.

The move puts Public Storage in the company of other high-profile California departures, including Tesla, SpaceX, and Chevron. The company said the relocation is part of a broader restructuring and added that it intends to maintain a long-term presence in Glendale.

For East County, where Public Storage remains a familiar presence with multiple facilities in Santee, El Cajon, and surrounding communities, the move is largely symbolic — day-to-day operations at local storage units are not expected to change. But the departure of the company's corporate leadership is another chapter in the ongoing trend of businesses moving their headquarters out of California.
