San Diego County is looking for poll workers to staff vote centers during the June 2 Gubernatorial Primary Election, and there's a paid opportunity waiting for East County residents who want to get involved.
The Registrar of Voters is offering a daily stipend of $145 for workers staffing vote centers from May 23 through June 1, and $240 on Election Day itself due to the extended hours. Workers who complete two days of paid training will earn an additional $95 per day for that time. Bilingual workers receive a bonus — an extra $5 per day, and $10 extra on Election Day.
There is a particular need for bilingual poll workers. Federal and state law requires the Registrar to provide bilingual materials and speakers across 15 languages, including Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Korean, and others. If you're fluent in a second language, your skills are especially needed this cycle.
Under the Voter's Choice Act, San Diego County no longer uses traditional single-day polling places. Instead, vote centers are open for an extended period — four or 11 days leading up to Election Day — giving workers more scheduling options.
To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen and registered California voter (or lawfully admitted permanent resident), have reliable transportation to your assigned vote center, and be available to work multiple days including Election Day. Applications are available at sdvote.com. For questions, call 858-565-5800 or email pollworker@sdcounty.ca.gov.
