A woman suspected in an armed carjacking in Lakeside was arrested after deputies used an automated license plate reader alert to locate the stolen vehicle in Spring Valley, according to Patch and City News Service.
Sheriff’s officials said two people were standing outside a GMC Yukon in the 11600 block of Hi Ridge Road around 11:30 a.m. Saturday when a woman with a handgun approached them and demanded the SUV and items from their pockets. No injuries were reported.
Deputies searched the area after the carjacking, then entered the Yukon into the license plate reader system. Just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station deputy received an alert that the vehicle was near Jamacha Road and Sweetwater Road in Spring Valley.
Authorities said the deputy found the Yukon at a convenience store in the 1000 block of Elkelton Road and arrested 43-year-old Oralia Covernali, who matched the suspect description. Sheriff’s officials said she was arrested on suspicion of carjacking, robbery and an outstanding felony warrant, then booked into Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee.
For Santee and East County residents, the case is another example of how license plate reader technology is being used across local sheriff’s substations to track stolen vehicles and suspects moving between nearby communities. Read the original report from Patch.
