The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran entered its seventh day Friday with no signs of de-escalation, as Israeli warplanes struck Tehran and Beirut, the U.S. military struck an Iranian drone carrier at sea, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned the American air campaign would "surge dramatically" — leaving San Diego military families to watch and wait.

Six U.S. service members have been killed in the conflict, according to the Associated Press, with American forces waging an unrelenting campaign against Iran's navy, missile bases, and nuclear infrastructure. The U.S. military's Central Command released footage of an Iranian drone carrier, the IRIS Shahid Bagheri, ablaze after a U.S. strike early Friday morning. The strikes in Lebanon were described as the heaviest since a 2024 ceasefire, with tens of thousands fleeing Beirut's suburbs after sweeping Israeli evacuation warnings.

San Diego is home to Naval Base San Diego, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and Naval Air Station North Island — making the region one of the most directly connected communities in the nation to the ongoing conflict. The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, home-ported in San Diego, was previously dispatched to the region. Military officials have urged service members and their families to maintain operational security and remain vigilant.

The economic toll is already being felt locally. Oil prices spiked following the conflict's outbreak, with Qatar's energy minister warning that disruption to Gulf energy exports could send oil to $150 a barrel — a scenario that would mean steep gasoline price increases for Santee and East County commuters already contending with elevated prices at the pump.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said Friday that "some countries" have begun mediation efforts, without elaborating further. The United Nations urged all parties to de-escalate immediately. No ceasefire timeline has been offered. Families of deployed service members can find support resources through Military OneSource at militaryonesource.mil or through Family Readiness Officers at their respective installations.
