AMC Theatres plans to open at Grossmont Center in La Mesa in the first half of 2027, taking over the theater space recently vacated by Reading Cinemas, according to ABC 10News.
Reading Cinemas Grossmont closed last Monday after operating at the center since 2008. Federal Realty, which owns Grossmont Center, said the theater has been a longtime part of the shopping center experience and called AMC's arrival a milestone in the property's modernization.
AMC said the 10-auditorium theater will receive extensive updates, including the company's signature power reclining seats in every auditorium. The company said more additions will be announced closer to opening.
For Santee and East County moviegoers, the change keeps a major cinema option in the Grossmont Center corridor after Reading's closure. The center sits just west of Santee in La Mesa and remains one of the region's main shopping and entertainment hubs.
