Santee's annual celebration of all things canine is marking a milestone this year as Fido Fest returns for its 10th anniversary on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Town Center Community Park East.
What started as a modest neighborhood gathering in 2016 has grown into one of East County's most popular community events, drawing more than 2,500 attendees last year. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features free admission.
The heart of the event is Adoption Alley, where more than 20 local shelters and rescue organizations will showcase dogs looking for homes. Participating groups include Frosted Faces, Lionel's Legacy Senior Dog Rescue, and Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue, among others. The San Diego Humane Society will offer free microchipping and on-site pet licensing at the Dog Wellness Zone.
Activities include professional-style agility courses, pet costume contests on the main stage, and demonstrations from the Sheriff's K-9 Unit. Food vendors and local artisans will also be on hand. Attendees who bring donations of unopened dog food, bedding, or toys will be entered into a prize drawing.
All dogs must be friendly, comfortable in crowds, and kept on leashes of six feet or less. Puppies must be at least four months old with full vaccinations. The city moved the festival from its original June date to winter after organizers realized the East County heat was too intense for comfort and safety.
