El Cajon is preparing to install automated warning systems aimed at slowing drivers on streets with dangerous crash patterns, according to NBC 7 San Diego.
Under the pilot program, drivers caught going more than 20 mph over the speed limit would receive a written warning. City leaders and residents discussed the plan at a town hall meeting Tuesday night.
NBC 7 reported that the pilot would install four automated warning systems using cameras or sensors. The outlet quoted El Cajon driver Dan Cota, who said speeding has made some streets feel dangerous for walking.
The system is expected to be up and running in the next six weeks, according to NBC 7. The report did not identify the specific streets where the warning systems would be installed.
For Santee and East County drivers, the El Cajon pilot is worth watching because traffic safety programs can spread quickly when nearby cities test new tools. If the warnings reduce speeding without moving immediately to citations, other jurisdictions may face pressure to consider similar approaches.
