Two brush fires erupted in San Diego County on Sunday as hot, dry, and windy conditions swept through the region — and Cal Fire officials are warning Monday that higher temperatures and continued fire danger are expected to return later this week.

One of the weekend fires ignited around noon in Birdland near the 2200 block of Meadow Lark Drive, close to an apartment complex and power lines. More than 80 firefighters, multiple brush rigs, and a helicopter responded. Firefighters contained the wind-driven blaze at two acres. A second fire sparked near Interstate 805 and Telegraph Canyon Road, also threatening homes, but was extinguished quickly. No injuries were reported in either incident.

"You always hear the same terminology — the perfect recipe: fuel, weather, temperature, and the alignment that comes into place. Anytime these three come into play, we really start looking at resources and ramping up everything we need to do to be prepared," said Cal Fire Captain Tom Piranio.

Officials are urging homeowners across the county to complete yard work before 10 a.m. to minimize fire risk. Clearing dead and dying vegetation, leaves, and brush from around homes is especially critical as warm, dry weather returns.

Cal Fire noted that wind-driven fires are particularly difficult to contain because they preheat adjacent fuel, allowing flames to spread rapidly toward structures. Residents can report unsafe vegetation and request fire hazard inspections through their local fire jurisdiction.
