Cal Fire will suspend all residential outdoor burn permits across San Diego County beginning at 8 a.m. May 1, citing significant vegetation growth, rising temperatures, low humidity and seasonal winds.

The suspension applies to residential outdoor burning of landscape debris, including branches and leaves, according to Patch. Cal Fire San Diego Unit and Fire Chief Tony Mecham said the move is intended to safeguard communities and resources during a period of earlier and more intense fire seasons.

Cal Fire reported that firefighters statewide have already responded to more than 840 wildfires since Jan. 1. During the suspension, the agency is urging residents to maintain at least 100 feet of defensible space around homes and buildings and to make evacuation plans.

The rule matters across Santee and East County, where dry brush, canyon edges and wind-driven fire risk can turn routine yard debris into a bigger hazard. Restricted temporary permits may still be issued for essential public health and safety reasons, and agricultural, land management, fire training and industrial burns may continue only after Cal Fire inspection and special approval.

Campfires within organized campgrounds or on private property are not covered by the residential burn-permit suspension. Campfire permits are available through local fire stations and ReadyForWildfire.org.
