The Thorn Fire in East County has burned 1,234 acres and was 45% contained Thursday evening, East County Magazine reported, citing Cal Fire. Some evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted, while others remain in place.
The temporary evacuation center at Golden Acorn Casino has closed, according to the report. Firefighters continued strengthening containment lines and mopping up as shifting winds from a passing thunderstorm cell created challenging conditions.
The fire began Wednesday afternoon near Buckthorn Trail and Clover Trail in Live Oak Springs near Campo, then spread northeast across Interstate 8 toward Boulevard and McCain Valley, East County Magazine reported.
No structures had been reported lost and no injuries had been reported in the Cal Fire incident report cited by East County Magazine. The cause remains under investigation.
For Santee and inland East County residents, the fire is another reminder that evacuation routes, alerts and defensible space matter well beyond the immediate burn area during peak summer wildfire conditions.
