A fast-moving brush fire near Boulevard forced evacuations Wednesday evening after burning 1,201 acres and crossing Interstate 8, according to ABC 10News and fire officials cited in the report. The Thorn Fire was listed at 0% containment as of the station's latest update early Thursday.
The fire erupted near the 2500 block of Buckthorn Trail in the Boulevard area and followed reports of a trailer fire that spread into nearby vegetation, according to ABC 10News. Officials said the cause of the trailer fire was unknown.
Evacuation orders and warnings were issued for affected areas, and a temporary evacuation point was set up at Golden Acorn Casino, 1800 Golden Acorn Way. Red Cross volunteers were also opening an overnight shelter at the casino, the station reported.
Interstate 8 was affected between Crestwood Road and Ribbonwood Road. Caltrans said the No. 1 lane in both directions had reopened, while ramps remained closed, according to ABC 10News.
The fire is in southeastern San Diego County, not Santee, but it is a reminder for East County residents to monitor official alerts during hot, dry conditions. A smoke advisory was issued for areas around Live Oak Springs, Boulevard, Tierra Del Sol and McCain Valley, and affected residents were advised to limit physical and outdoor activity.
