A wanted suspect was arrested Wednesday after a pursuit that began in Spring Valley and stretched nearly 56 miles across San Diego County, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and ABC 10News.
Deputies from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station’s Crime Suppression Team were patrolling near 9400 Campo Road when they saw 29-year-old Jonclaude Smith driving in the area, authorities said. Deputies said Smith had several felony warrants.
When deputies attempted a traffic stop at about 1:46 p.m., Smith allegedly failed to yield and led law enforcement on an hour-long pursuit. Multiple agencies assisted as sheriff’s ASTREA helicopter crews tracked the vehicle.
The pursuit ended near Deer Springs Road and south Interstate 15, where Smith was taken into custody. He was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of felony evading and the felony warrants, according to authorities.
For Santee and East County drivers, the case is another reminder of how quickly a police pursuit that starts on a familiar local road can spill onto major county freeways and affect traffic far beyond the first stop.
