Santee voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to approve Measure Y, a proposed one-cent sales tax increase that would run for 10 years, according to ABC 10News.

If approved, the measure would raise Santee's sales tax rate from 7.75% to 8.75%. City leaders voted in June to put the general sales tax measure on the ballot, and officials estimate it could generate about $14 million per year.

Unlike Proposition S, the half-cent fire and emergency services tax measure voters rejected in 2024, Measure Y would not be restricted to a single purpose. City officials told ABC 10News the added flexibility could allow revenue to be used for broader city needs, including road repairs, essential services and infrastructure.

For shoppers, the proposal would add one cent for every dollar of taxable purchases. ABC 10News reported that groceries, prescription medicine and diapers would not be subject to the proposed tax increase.

The decision now goes to Santee voters in the November election. If approved, the new rate would make Santee's sales tax the highest among East County cities, according to ABC 10News.
