San Diego Moves to Erase Cesar Chavez Name From City Facilities After Abuse Allegations

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria signed an executive order Friday directing the removal of Cesar Chavez's name from all city facilities, programs, and public assets โ€” one of the fastest local government responses following a report detailing sexual abuse allegations against the late farmworker rights leader.

The allegations, which include accounts from several women who said they were abused by Chavez at least partially while they were young girls during the peak of the farmworkers rights movement he led in the 1970s, triggered immediate action across San Diego institutions. Within 24 hours of the report's release, the city said it had identified all assets requiring renaming consideration.

The Cesar Chavez Community Center in San Diego has already had its name removed from the building. Renaming Cesar Chavez Parkway requires a more involved process โ€” property owners on the street must be notified and the San Diego City Council must approve a municipal code amendment. Additionally, Gloria's office announced the city will work with the council to rename the March 31 holiday from Cesar Chavez Day to "Farmworkers Day," aligning with a California legislative bill that Gov. Gavin Newsom supports.

The Port of San Diego said its board will take up the renaming of Cesar Chavez Park along the San Diego Bay at its next board meeting Tuesday. Local colleges also moved to remove references to Chavez from their campuses.

While East County cities have fewer Chavez-named assets than the City of San Diego, the renaming wave is expected to ripple through public institutions countywide. Chavez, who died in California in 1993 at age 66, had been honored with a state holiday, a national proclamation by President Barack Obama in 2014, and school curricula throughout California that are now under review.
