A magnitude 3.5 earthquake off the coast near Dana Point was reported felt by some Santee residents Monday afternoon, according to Patch AM and earthquake data from the Southern California Seismic Network.

The reviewed seismic report placed the quake at 1:22:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, about 31 kilometers southwest of Dana Point, with a depth of about 11 kilometers. Patch AM reported weak shaking and no damage.

For Santee, the timing is a useful reminder rather than an emergency. The city calendar lists The Great ShakeOut earthquake drill for 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, when residents, schools and workplaces are encouraged to practice drop, cover and hold on.

Local households should use the reminder to check emergency supplies, secure heavy furniture and make sure family communication plans are current. County officials have also been urging residents to keep go-kits ready during the ongoing heat, wildfire and power-shutoff season.
