Federal agents arrested a Lakeside man and two Kansas men Friday in an alleged plot to support ISIS and target U.S. service members, according to East County Magazine, citing the U.S. Justice Department.
East County Magazine reported that Bereen Dzayee, 25, of Lakeside, was arrested along with Bisaam Ghafoor, 21, of Leawood, Kansas, and Elias Shamsaldeen, 21, of Porterville, Kansas. The allegations are detailed in a federal complaint filed in the District of Kansas.
According to the report, prosecutors allege the defendants provided more than $2,000 to a person they believed was connected to ISIS and discussed plans involving drones and other support for violent attacks. The defendants are accused of conspiring to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
The case has a direct East County connection because one of the defendants is from Lakeside, just north of Santee, and because the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force in the San Diego Field Office was among the agencies involved in the investigation. FBI offices in Kansas City and Sacramento also worked on the case, with assistance from additional field offices.
The allegations remain allegations unless proven in court. East County Magazine reported that federal prosecutors from Kansas and the Justice Department's Counterterrorism Section are handling the case, with assistance from the U.S. attorney's offices for the Eastern and Southern districts of California.
