A head-on crash on Interstate 8 near Lake Jennings Park Road killed both drivers Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol and reporting from Patch/City News Service.

The crash happened about 11 a.m. Thursday when an eastbound 2023 Toyota RAV4 crossed the center median into westbound lanes near Lakeside, CHP public-affairs Officer Jasmine Lopez told City News Service. The Toyota collided with an oncoming 2023 Honda Accord.

The 43-year-old man driving the Honda died at the scene. Paramedics took the 24-year-old Toyota driver to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said both drivers were El Cajon residents, and their names were being withheld pending family notification.

CHP said intoxication was not believed to be a factor in the collision. The crash happened just east of Santee on a route many East County drivers use to travel between inland communities and the rest of the county.
