Local leaders broke ground Friday on Spring View Apartments, a 147-unit affordable housing development planned next to the Spring Street trolley stop in La Mesa, according to NBC 7 San Diego and City News Service.
The $106 million, six-story project is planned with studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments for individuals, families and veterans earning between 30% and 60% of area median income, officials said.
NBC 7 reported that the development will use surplus Metropolitan Transit System land, transforming part of an underused park-and-ride lot into transit-connected housing. Affirmed Housing is building the project through a public-private partnership.
The county is contributing $8.5 million and 40 project-based vouchers, including four Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers and 36 Section 8 vouchers. For Santee and East County residents, the project is another example of housing growth being tied to trolley access rather than open-edge development.
