La Mesa officials are reviewing a long-awaited San Diego Association of Governments study that lays out possible major changes around the Spring Street Trolley Station, according to ABC 10News.
The study looks at ways to improve traffic flow and prepare for future transit service in the area. The options under review include raising the trolley tracks, lowering surrounding streets beneath the tracks or placing the tracks in a trench below street level.
According to 10News, SANDAG has said construction for one concept could take about 50 months, or just over four years. The proposal comes as SANDAG plans to eventually increase Orange Line trolley service from every 15 minutes to every 7.5 minutes.
The project remains in early planning. No final design has been selected, and 10News reported there is no funding plan or construction schedule yet.
For Santee and East County residents, the study matters because the Orange Line is one of the region's main transit links west toward La Mesa, Lemon Grove and downtown San Diego. Any long-term change around Spring Street could affect travel patterns well beyond La Mesa Village.
