Police in La Mesa and Escondido will conduct DUI checkpoints Friday night as part of impaired-driving enforcement efforts, according to Patch.

The La Mesa checkpoint is scheduled from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday at 4900 Spring St. Escondido police plan a separate checkpoint from 5 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location in that city.

Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on impaired-driving crash data. The departments also reminded drivers that impairment can come from alcohol, marijuana, prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs.

For Santee residents heading west through La Mesa on Friday night, the practical takeaway is simple: allow extra time, use a sober driver and keep rideshare or pickup plans in place before the evening starts.
