An 80-year-old woman died Wednesday after she was struck by a vehicle outside the Costco in La Mesa, according to East County Magazine and the La Mesa Police Department.

Police said officers responded to 9-1-1 calls shortly after noon and found the woman lying in the roadway and unresponsive. Officers and fire department personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but the woman later died at a hospital.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Lt. Travis Higgins told East County Magazine. Police said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision, and the woman's identity is being withheld.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call La Mesa police at 619-667-1400.

For Santee and East County residents who regularly shop or drive through La Mesa, the crash is a reminder to use extra caution in busy retail driveways and parking-lot entrances, where pedestrians and vehicles often cross paths at close range.
