A suspect was arrested Thursday in connection with an assault that left a woman critically injured last week in La Mesa, according to NBC 7 San Diego and City News Service.

Alexsis Magana Moreno, 22, was taken into custody near Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, La Mesa police said.

Police said the case stems from an April 30 assault in the 8200 block of Parkway Drive, where a 38-year-old woman was found unconscious and bleeding from the head. The woman, who police said is believed to be homeless, remained hospitalized in critical condition.

La Mesa police said they have not disclosed a suspected motive. Lt. Travis Higgins said the relationship between the suspect and victim remains under investigation.

Moreno was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and was being held without bail pending a Monday afternoon arraignment. The case is a significant update for East County residents following police requests for public help earlier this week.
