The US-Israel war against Iran entered its 18th day Tuesday with a dramatic escalation: Israel claims it killed Ali Larijani, Iran's national security chief and one of the most powerful figures in the country's government. If confirmed, it would be the most senior Iranian official assassinated since Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of strikes on February 28.

Israel's military also confirmed a separate strike killed Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of Iran's Basij paramilitary force — a militia of several million members. Massive explosions were reported across Tehran and in Ahvaz, Isfahan, and Shiraz through Tuesday morning. The UAE temporarily shut down its airspace as it responded to Iranian missile and drone threats, though flights resumed after officials said the situation "stabilised."

For East County residents, the conflict is anything but distant. Marine F-35C stealth jets from VMFA-314 (the "Black Knights"), based at MCAS Miramar, have been operating from the USS Abraham Lincoln since the conflict began on Feb. 28 as part of Operation Epic Fury. Miramar families have been navigating deployment uncertainties throughout the three-week campaign.

The economic toll is landing here at home too. Brent crude oil climbed 3% to $103.20 a barrel Tuesday — up nearly 50% from pre-war levels — as Iran successfully targeted oil and gas production facilities for the first time, setting a major natural gas field in the UAE on fire. San Diego drivers are already feeling it at the pump. Wholesale gas prices rose nearly 3% on Tuesday to €52 per megawatt hour, compared to about €30 before the war.

The conflict is now in its third week with no signs of ceasefire negotiations. Trump administration officials have publicly stated the goal of ensuring Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Iran's government continues to function under a transitional council following Khamenei's death, and its military has demonstrated the capability to strike Gulf energy infrastructure — a development that could have lasting economic consequences for San Diego's military-heavy economy.
