Iran Strikes Gulf States, Hormuz Remains Blocked: What It Means for San Diego

Iran launched a fresh wave of strikes against Gulf state targets on March 16, including ballistic missiles and drones aimed at UAE oil facilities and the area near Dubai International Airport, which temporarily suspended flights. Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting dozens of Iranian drones targeting its eastern oil installations. The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively paralyzed by the conflict, now in its 16th day.

President Trump called on allied nations to deploy warships to help reopen the strait, which serves as the transit point for roughly 20 percent of the world's seaborne oil. Global crude oil prices have surged past $100 per barrel since the conflict began, and analysts warn prices could climb further if the blockade continues.

For San Diego, the conflict hits close to home on multiple fronts. Marine Corps F-35C jets from MCAS Miramar have been involved in strike operations against Iran since the conflict began on February 28, and Marines and amphibious warships have been ordered to the Middle East. The Department of Defense identified six U.S. Air Force crew members killed last week when a KC-135 refueling tanker went down over western Iraq in connection with the operations.

At the pump, San Diego gas prices have already reached record highs, exceeding $5.50 per gallon at many East County stations. Analysts warn prices could climb further if the Hormuz blockade persists and global crude supply remains disrupted. California's unique fuel blend requirements and limited refinery capacity amplify the impact of any global oil price spike.

Residents and businesses dependent on fuel-intensive operations โ€” including commuters, delivery services, and contractors โ€” can expect to feel continued pricing pressure this week. The conflict also has ripple effects for military families in East County, many of whom have spouses or relatives currently deployed in the region.
