The teachers union representing educators in the Grossmont Union High School District has endorsed three challengers for November school board races, according to East County Magazine. The Grossmont Education Association is backing Jenee Littrell in Area 3, Steve Mull in Area 4 and Pete Mergens in Area 5.

Area 4 includes Lakeside and Santee, making the race directly relevant for Santee families with students in the high school district. Mull, a retired Lakeside School District educator and former Lakeside Middle School principal, is running against incumbent Robert Shield, according to the report.

East County Magazine reported that the union withheld endorsements from previously backed incumbents amid allegations involving board conduct, labor relations and past district decisions. The article also noted continuing public debate over 2025 staffing cuts, board pay increases and litigation connected to district governance.

The election is scheduled for November. For Santee residents, the races will help determine the direction of a high school district that serves East County communities and shapes programs, staffing and policy decisions affecting local students.
