Grossmont Union High School District trustees approved an athletics funding package of about $1.79 million on June 23, according to East County Magazine. The district serves East County high school families, including Santee-area students at campuses such as Santana and West Hills.
The package includes $359,418 for certified athletic trainers, $1.08 million for additional campus stipends and $342,000 for referees and officials, East County Magazine reported. Supporters said the funding would improve student-athlete safety, reduce pressure on booster clubs and help build stronger campus culture.
Trustee Chris Fite proposed amendments that would have paired the athletics spending with equivalent investments in libraries, but those proposals did not pass, according to the report. Some speakers supported the athletics funding while arguing that academic resources, libraries and staffing also need attention.
The vote comes after a year of public debate over GUHSD budget priorities, including previous layoffs and criticism from teachers and former staff members. East County Magazine reported that some trustees questioned the process and late revisions before the final measure passed.
For Santee families, the issue is practical as much as political: athletics, school staffing and district budgeting all shape the high school experience. The next thing to watch is how the district implements the funding across campuses and whether academic-resource concerns return at future board meetings.
