El Cajon's lawsuit challenging California's sanctuary law has drawn national attention, turning an East County legal fight into a broader debate over immigration enforcement, public safety and local authority, according to East County Magazine.

The case, filed April 29 in San Diego Superior Court's East County Division, names California Attorney General Rob Bonta and challenges Senate Bill 54, the 2017 state law that limits how local law enforcement agencies cooperate with federal immigration authorities. East County Magazine reported that El Cajon leaders and supporters frame the lawsuit as a question of local discretion, while state officials and opponents argue the law has already survived prior legal challenges and supports public safety by encouraging witnesses and victims to work with police.

The filing followed a 3-2 City Council vote and has drawn public comments from El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, Councilmember Steve Goble, Councilmember Gary Kendrick, Bonta, federal immigration officials and local advocates, according to the report. Supporters say the city needs more flexibility in cases involving serious crimes or welfare checks, while critics question the legal footing and say the lawsuit risks politicizing local policing.

For Santee residents, the case is worth watching because El Cajon is one of East County's largest cities and often sets the tone for regional debates over public safety policy. The outcome could influence how nearby cities discuss cooperation with federal agencies, state mandates and the role of local police departments.

A case management conference is scheduled for Oct. 2, 2026, in San Diego Superior Court. Until then, the lawsuit is likely to remain part of a larger statewide and national debate over immigration law and the balance of power between California and local governments.
