East County residents looking to adopt a pet can visit San Diego Humane Society's El Cajon campus Saturday, Aug. 29, when adoption fees will be waived during a one-day Clear the Shelters event, according to Patch. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Patch reported that San Diego Humane Society is caring for nearly 1,900 animals while about 80 animals enter its care each day. The organization also said the average length of stay for dogs has increased to 59 days, up 28% from last year.
The Humane Society has helped 1,432 pets find homes so far this month after offering half-price adoption fees throughout August, according to Patch. Adopted animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.
For Santee families, the closest participating campus is in El Cajon, making this a nearby option for residents considering adoption. Available animals can be viewed through San Diego Humane Society's adoption listings before visiting.
