A 72-year-old Ramona woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in a suspected DUI head-on collision on La Cresta Road in the unincorporated East County area, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash occurred at 2:54 p.m. east of Coyote Ridge when a 30-year-old El Cajon woman driving an eastbound 2011 Chevrolet Silverado crossed over solid double-yellow lines into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta. The driver of the Jetta was pronounced dead at the scene. The Silverado driver was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital with major injuries.
Authorities said alcohol appears to have been a factor in the collision. The names of both drivers have not been released. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by CHP.
La Cresta Road is a winding two-lane route frequently used by East County commuters traveling between Crest, Harbison Canyon, and the Dehesa area. Santee and El Cajon residents who use the road should be aware that the stretch near Coyote Ridge has limited visibility and narrow shoulders, making it particularly dangerous for head-on scenarios.
