The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $9.16 billion annual budget Thursday, finalizing a spending plan that affects county services used by Santee and East County residents.

Times of San Diego reported that officials said the budget adds support for public safety tied to Proposition 36 responsibilities and protects health and safety-net programs affected by federal cuts. The vote followed months of planning, public hearings and a recent revision to the county's proposal.

According to the report, the budget absorbs $68.4 million in first-year impacts from federal benefit-program cuts, including CalFresh staffing and administrative costs. Supervisor Jim Desmond said he supported parts of the budget, including $98 million more for public safety, youth crisis services, road maintenance and library projects, while objecting to other spending.

For Santee residents, the county budget matters most in areas where county government touches daily life: sheriff services, health and human services, libraries, roads, emergency response and regional safety-net programs.

The new county fiscal year begins July 1, making Thursday's vote the final step before departments begin operating under the approved spending plan.
