A brush fire burning near Campo grew to 132 acres Monday afternoon, prompting evacuation orders for several far East County zones before crews stopped its forward progress, according to CAL FIRE.

The Church 2 Fire started at 2:26 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, along Church Road about 1 mile south of Interstate 8. CAL FIRE listed the fire at 5% containment as of its 4:45 p.m. update and said the cause remains under investigation.

Evacuation orders were issued for zones SDC-2329, SDC-2330 and SDC-2331. Evacuation warnings were issued for zones SDC-2332, SDC-2333 and SDC-2407. CAL FIRE also listed a road closure on Old Highway 80 from east of Church Road to west of Tierra Del Sol.

The fire is east of Santee, but it is a reminder for East County residents that mid-August brush conditions can turn quickly. Residents with travel plans through the Campo and Boulevard area should check official evacuation maps, road closures and CAL FIRE updates before heading east.

CAL FIRE said air and ground resources worked together Monday afternoon to slow the spread and build containment lines. Santee Pulse will watch for additional official updates as crews continue work on the fire.
