San Diego County’s plan for Alpine’s first public park is moving into its next phase after county supervisors unanimously approved additional environmental review for the project, according to ABC 10News.

The proposal would place the park near South Grade and Tavern roads on about 98 acres next to Wright’s Field. County plans call for roughly 25 acres to become a community park, with the remaining 73 acres preserved as open space.

Supporters say Alpine has waited decades for a public park. But some nearby residents are pushing back on the proposed location, arguing that added traffic could complicate evacuation routes in an area already vulnerable to wildfire.

Resident Patrick Williams told ABC 10News the area is one of Alpine’s most congested evacuation corridors and said a busy park could create problems if a fire broke out during peak use. Other residents told the station they support the idea of a park but question whether this site is the right one.

The county restarted the environmental impact report process after earlier litigation over the project. Once that review is completed and approved, the park proposal can move forward.
